We finally made our way south of the border to the land of berets, croissants, and smug attitudes. Situated on the French-German border in the region of Alace, Strasbourg France has been passed back and forward between the two countries for years. The Grande Ile (Big Island), in the midst of the River Ill, is the ancient heart of the city and where we spent most of our time. Strasbourg's great landmark is the Cathédrale Notre-Dame in the Vieille Ville (Old Town) which you can see pictured often in our photo album. Around the Cathedral are an array of museums, cafés and restaurants. We spent the afternoon walking around the town, had traditional french lunch of quiche lorraine and flamkuchken (French style pizza with a paper thin crust, sour cream, bacon, and onions), and took a scenic boat ride around the island. After a stop off back at the hotel, we headed back out to Petite France for a traditional Alace dinner in a super cool little French restaurant. Todd asked for the most local thing on the menu and was rewarded with plate of 6 varieties of pork. Thats right, SIX! 1 clean plate and 6 glasses of water later, we headed back to the hotel for some much needed rest. The next day we walked around the city and enjoyed a great french breakfast in a little cafe full of locals. Coffee, juice, eggs, chocoloate croissants, etc. On a whim, we decided to see what 'points of interest' were scattered along the journey home. After about 30 miles we stumbled into the German wine region of Durbach. The winding roads went up and down the hillsides and led us to a rustic little "castle" which was the home of some amazing wines. We enjoyed a glass on the veranda overlooking the countryside, and walked the paths through the middle of the vineyards before hitting the road home. All weekend we kept thinking of our friends and family who we can take with us next time when they come to visit (hint, hint)! This trip looks awesome and we hope we can do it, too. You take so many great pix that really capture the culture and feeling of your destination. The vineyards were especially neat, and the cathedral and the baby and the hotel, and...well it is easy to tell you loved it. We know we will too.
