Afternoon, Ladies & Gentlemen of The Gridiron!
We
invite you all to join the “The 2nd Annual Turkey & Kraut Bowl” on Saturday
November 23rd at 11:00am at Gasthaus Hertzler in Bad Soden.
Since
the day The Pilgrims set foot on Plymouth Rock in search of Religious Freedom
and Cold Beer, the annual clash over a pig skinned ball in the hours leading up
to a Thanksgiving Feast has been a staple of American Culture.
It
wasn’t until 1934 that a little team known as THE Detroit Lions started the
modern day tradition of playing on Thanksgiving Day solely for the purpose of
allowing their male brethren an excuse to sit, drink, and sleep while the women
toiled over a stuffed bird and various fixings. The matchup that year
between the Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears proved to be an all-time
classic. The Lions had not allowed a touchdown until their eighth game and
entered the game against the Bears with a 10-1 record. The 26,000 tickets for
the Turkey Day clash in the University of Detroit Stadium, were sold out two
weeks in advance of the game. It was estimated that another 25,000 would have
attended had there been seats available. The Bears edged out the Lions
19-16 in the classic holiday struggle and then prevailed 10-7 three days later
to clinch the NFL Western Division crown.
The
guys we recreate this epic battle in a traditional flag football 4-on-4 winner
take all format (losers walk)! We will be pulling the grill into the park
where following the game (win or lose) a Turkey will be sacrified to appease
the football gods, served alongside some traditional fixings and American
Lager.
If
you happen to have a folding camping chair please bring it with you for the
makeshift spectator stands for the ladies and children.
