We took our first ever family ski trip to beautiful Alpbach, Austria!
A lot of planning went into this trip as the possiblities for amazing skiing in this region are endless!!! We settled on Alpbach Austria and we were so glad we did. Only 4 1/2 hours from our front door it was as easy as driving upnorth. The only difference??? You were in The Alps!!!
The town itself is a living postcard and anyone who has been to Alpbach can understand why this picturesque village can boast awards like "Most Beautiful Village in Austria" or "Most Beautiful Flower Village in Europe". The terrific Alpine landscape, the location on a sunny plateau, the well-maintained houses in typical Alpbach wooden style as well as the local culture and traditions are the essential to this Tyrolean mountain village. On the initiative of Kommerzialrat Alfons Moser, mayor of Alpbach from 1945 to 1979, the local council passed the local building regulations and decreed that ALL new buildings had to match the traditional Alpbach style (see pictures). In August 1983 Alpbach was elected "Austria's Most Beautiful Village" in a television competition held by the ORF due to its homogeneous wooden style and flower arrangements.
Our hotel, The Romantik Boeglerhof, was located right in the town center. We had a beautiful little apartment that was perfect for the three of us. Every day there was an amazing breakfast served in one of the 6 beautiful dining rooms and the same went for a 4 course dinner every evening. We spent a lot of time relaxing fireside when we weren't swimming in the outdoor pool or enjoying a hot sauna in one of the old wooden huts. Stew loved spending time in the pool. We spent two AMAZING days on the slopes with one snow filled powder day and another with a sky so blue it hurt your eyes to look at! It was big enough to keep your legs burning on the way down but small enough to not worry about where you were going to end up. Only a 5 minute ski bus ride seperates you from your hotel door and the gondola to the top. Not to mention you could ski three whole days for the price of a half day lift ticket at Boyne!
One evening in particular was very memorable. We signed up for a "Fondue Evening" at the front desk. After meeting the Inn owner, Johannes, out front of the hotel we were guided by torchlight up the side of the mountain 15 or 20 minutes to a old barn / house. They sat us with a lovely english family with three little girls (jackie related well) and we shared stories well into the night. It turns out they live in a little town about 2 hours north of London that we will be visiting in May thanks to some Bosch training events. Plans were made to meet up for dinner one night while we are in town.
We both agreed that it was one of the most relaxing, exciting, and unique vacations we have ever taken. The best part is now that we know what an easy little trip it is there will be many, many return trips in the near future!
To all our friends and family; We will happily take you there if you can just get yourself to Frankfurt!!!
