This was such an amazing weekend for so many reasons!
We knew we wanted to throw a nice birthday party for Stew that combined some of the traditions of the USA but with a theme from our new life here in Germany.
The inaugural Oktoberfest was first celebrated in Munich in 1810 in honor of Prince Ludwig’s marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The festivities began October 12, 1810, and lasted nearly a week until October 17, ending with an exciting horse race. After such a spectacular party, the happy couple decided that the same type of festival should be continued annually. In the following years, the festivities were repeated every year. Today, Oktoberfest is the largest festival in the world, with an international flavor that is extremely characteristic of the 21st century. More than 6 million visitors from all over the world take part in Oktoberfest every year.
Contrary to popular belief, the Celebration of Oktoberfest now begins in September. Therefore, we decided that the best thing to do would be to throw a big Oktoberfest Party taking into account all the Bavarian Traditions as a celebration of Stew's 1st Birthday.
What began as a small party with a couple friends and a few balloons quickly turned into quite an all out . All the stops were pulled out; traditional Bavarian clothing was purchased, a big Bavarian menu was created, a beer garden was erected, and an Oompa Band Reserved. The last part was thanks to my colleague who graciously offered his musical talents along with those of his fellow orchestra friends in exchange for an endless supply of beer. Done and done!
We invited work colleagues, neighbors, new friends and old friends to come help us celebrate Stew's special day. We ended up with a group of over 30 people! Danny and Irina came over and helped with the set up, the clean up, and everything in between (including the amazing pictures). Stew was in heaven as he took in the great music and played with all of his new friends. The night didn't end with the Bavarian Band, as guitars were pulled out and played well into the evening. Jackie and I both agreed that it was the best party we have ever thrown. Fitting, for the best thing that has ever happened to us; Stewart Waylan Hertzler.
The only thing more exciting than the party were the first steps he took the week before and the walking he has done since.
